Who We Are

Leadership

We are a small team with a big ambition. Combining our collective passion and knowledge of the leather and waste industries, we have created a framework for providing a transparent, inclusive and holistic approach to sustainability in the leather industry.

As we grow, so will our team and we are committed to employing like-minded, passionate individuals who will help drive the development of the Foundation to ensure it exceeds expectations and continues to add value and purpose for its partners.

Deborah Taylor - Managing Director

Deborah Taylor

Managing Director

Deborah previously managed the Leather Working Group, working with organisations around the world to improve the environmental impact of leather manufacture. As well as overseeing the day to day management of the Sustainable Leather Foundation, Deborah is also a UN/CEFACT Consultant, working on the UNECE project to “Enhance Traceability & Transparency for more Sustainable Value Chains in the garment and footwear sector” and is a Council Member of the Society of Leather Technologists and Chemists. Deborah is a Practitioner of the Chartered Quality Institute (PCQI) and is an accredited SA8000 Social Systems Lead Auditor.

Terri Hewlett

Terrie Hewlett

Administrator - Partnership and Finance

Terrie has a wealth of administrative experience, most notably working for FIRA International as part of the testing department, booking in new samples, raising contracts for work to be carried out, flammability testing preparations, writing reports, signing certificates and invoicing including credit control and collection of aged debt.

More recently Terrie worked for the Leather Working Group, initially as the Membership Administrator before becoming the Technical Administrator.

Sam Taylor

Communications And Marketing Officer

Sam holds a degree in Politics and International Relations with a specialist interest in environmental and economic sustainability.  He has recently worked in sales for British American Tobacco, the largest tobacco company in the world and this gave him the opportunity to work across multi-level outlets and suppliers and also gave him a experience of communicating in different ways to different stakeholders.

Earlier in his career, Sam worked within the public sector, for Warwickshire Country Council’s Library Division which gave him experience of communications at a very practical level and also taught him the importance of systems and procedures.

Non-Executive Director - Operations

With over 30 years working for one of biggest machinery suppliers in the industry, alongside working as a UN Consultant, Ralph understands what it takes to strive for efficiency of process. Ralph has contributed to many publications including the Leather Guidebook published by the International Trade Centre (ITC) and A Blueprint for The African Leather Industry by UNIDO

Kevin Latner

Kevin Latner

Non-Executive Director - Finance and Policy

Kevin has 30 years experience in agricultural trade policy, strategic planning, trade marketing, monitoring and research. He is passionate about the contribution that sustainable and renewable agricultural products make to our lives, our communities, our supply chains and world.  Kevin is vice president of the Leather and Hide Council of America (LHCA) and has previously served as executive director of Cotton Council International and as vice president of the National Cotton Council  of America.  He also has 15 years experience with USDA’s Foreign Agricultural Service, working in China and Japan.  Kevin holds a MS in Agricultural Economics, a law degree in International Trade Law and undergraduate degrees in International Relations and Spanish.

Antoinette Garzon

Volunteer Intern - Special Projects

Antoinette has a BA in Modern Languages with a minor in Literary Studies, and is now completing her MA in Development Studies at the Erasmus University in the Netherlands.  With a background in teaching, Antoinette’s focus evolved to educating young people about the need to protect the environment and stop exploitation of people and resources.  As a researcher on Development Studies, Antoinette has been working on local development with women migrant entrepreneurs in the Netherlands and other strategies for localisation in humanitarian organizations like Cordaid. She comes from the heart of the textile industry in Colombia, and believes in the power of sustainable businesses and ethical brand creation.

SLF Advisory Board

Our Advisory Board has been established to ensure that we have a fully rounded representation of the leather value chain involved with the Foundation right from inception.

The Advisory Board members have been selected based on their knowledge and experience in areas spanning the wider ecosystem of the industry; including farming and livestock, deforestation & land conversion, leather manufacture, chemistry, machinery manufacture & efficiency, policy & regulation, retail & consumer, leather technology, global representation and strategy.

This valued team of individuals will support the strategy, direction and tools of the Foundation to ensure we have a fit-for-purpose initiative that meets its vision to support the global leather industry and add value in an inclusive and cohesive way.

Katie Kutskill

Chair of Advisory Board

Katie is the Executive Global Director of Product Development and Sustainability Officer at Pangea (formerly known as GST AutoLeather). With a background in Environmental Policy and Leather Technology, she brings a holistic, visionary approach to evaluating and communicating the true nature of leather’s life cycle. Katie’s most recent passion is in expanding the application of Leather Enrichments, where responsibly made leather meets innovation and design.

Taj Alam

Taj Alam​

Taj is the Chairman and Managing Director of Kings International Ltd – a tannery specialising in Saddlery Leather. With over 40 years experience, Taj is Vice-President of U P Leather Industries Association, Director of Unnao Tanneries Pollution Board, Convener for the Harness & Saddlery Panel on the Council for Leather Exports and the President of the Indian Harness & Saddlery Exporters’ Association.
Mauricio Bauer​

Mauricio Bauer

Mauricio is the Senior Director for Beef and Leather Supply Chains with WWF US. With 20+ years of Executive Corporate experience in agricultural commodities in the United States, Australia and Brazil, he provides strategic coordination and guidance to coalition partners in the development and execution of WWF’s global beef and leather strategies, to eliminate the loss and degradation of tropical and sub-tropical forest ecosystems that result from the production of beef and leather.
Niccolo Duranti

Niccolo Duranti

Niccolo grew up in the heart of the Italian leather region and has worked for both tanneries and brands. This enables him to bring balance to our vision, along with his passion for sustainability.
Jiska Gojowczyk

Jiska Gojowczyk

As a researcher at the SÜDWIND-Institute in Bonn, Germany, Jiska inquires into social and ecological flaws in the value chains of leather and shoes worldwide. She campaigns for transparency and strong, effective social standards and regulation.
Hans van Haarst

Hans van Haarst

With over 30 years experience working for Blue Chip process companies, Hans brings a strategic, corporate perspective to the foundation. Hans is the CEO of Smit & Zoon, one of the industry’s leading chemical companies when it comes to a sustainable business vision.

Reiner Heingstmann

Reiner Hengstmann has a PhD in Chemistry and was the Global Director for Sustainability and Compliance at the sporting goods company Puma from 1999 to 2016 and, subsequently, Senior Head of Global Sustainability at Hugo Boss. His main areas of work include chemicals management, sustainability training, and the added value of sustainability in the consumer goods industry.

Leisha Hewitt

Leisha is a consultant on animal welfare practice, industry standards and quality assurance frameworks, with a particular emphasis on animal welfare at slaughter and a specialist in the development and implementation of animal welfare standards. She holds the position of Adjunct Lecturer at Adelaide University, teaching animal welfare and is frequently called upon in a technical expert capacity by NGOs, government and industry. Leisha holds a PhD in Clinical Veterinary Science.
Ivan Kral

Ivan Kral

Ivan co-authored UNIDO’s “The Framework for Sustainable Leather Manufacture” and is an Industrial Development Officer for UNIDO, specialising in the leather industry. UNIDO provides technical assistance to promote best practice in the leather industry through their Leather Panel e-learning platform.
Mwinyikione Mwinyihija

Mwinyikione Mwinyihija

Mwinyi is the Executive Director of the Africa Leather & Leather Products Institute (ALLPI) and is the current President of the International Council of Tanners (ICT). Mwinyi holds doctorates in Ecotoxicology of the Tanning Industry, Management & Remediation of Tannery Waste, and Value Added Strategy for the Leather Sector.

Chirag Patel

Chirag Patel is the CEO of Crest Leather, a leading global producer of high quality finished leather, mainly for upholstery. Headquartered in the UK, Crest Leather own and operate facilities in Italy, Brazil, Thailand, USA and South Africa. Chirag brings to the Foundation a vast experience of integrated value chains.
Dietrich Tegtmeyer

Dietrich Tegtmeyer

Dietrich is Global Head for Business Development and Industrial Relations at TFL and has over 30 years experience as a chemist. Dietrich has served as a past president of the International Union of Leather Technologists and Chemists (IULTCS). Dietrich also sits on the Executive Committee of LWG and the Supervisory Council of Leather Naturally. He represents the chemical perspective of the industry along with his commitment to sustainability.
Rosie Wollacott

Rosie Wollacott

With over 10 years of in-brand experience at luxury leather goods brand Mulberry, Rosie brings a consumer perspective to the Foundation, helping to ensure that the work conducted within the industry around sustainability and responsibility is translated and communicated cohesively to a wider audience.

Thomas Yu

Thomas C. J. Yu has 24+ years in the leather, paper and coating chemical industries. Thomas is currently the GM of Jollity Enterprise Co., Ltd., a chemical manufacture, and also the VP of Taiwanese International Leather Association(TILA). Thomas served as a Past President of IULTCS (2018~2019) and is currently a representative and contributor member of CSAG in ZDHC.

Suzie Fletcher

Patron

Suzie is a Master English Saddle Maker and member of the Society of Master Saddlers.  She also specializes in the restoration and repair of Saddles, Leather Goods and Solid Leather Furniture for her workship in Oxfordshire, England.
